After one week out of the shop (due to my day job), back to the installation of the wingtips. First I drilled, countersunk and riveted the small trailing edge rib. Then, as I choose to use screws to install the wingtip, I had to drill, countersink and rivet all the nutplates. There are 38 nutplates, that's 114 holes to drill (3 per nutplate : 2 rivets and one centerhole), 38 dimples and 114 holes to countersink. A lot of work to arrive at the result shown on the picture, where you can see some screws near the aileron bracket. And I only did the right wingtip, I'll tackle the left one tomorrow. Working time on this subpart Today : 3h (Total : 15h) |

Today I also begun the installation of the wingtips. First I had to re-rig the ailerons and check the alignment. Then the tips need to be cut at the trailing edge, to set the gap with the aileron. The whole contour of the tip needed to be cut back 1/16" to fit perfectly. After drilling small holes only (they will be enlarged later for screws), I installed the trailing edge rib that I'll drill later. I did the same operations on the roght tip but stopped short of drilling. Working time on this subpart Today : 3h (Total : 12h) |

Today I ended the building of the wingtip lenses, it did no go as easily as expected as the riveting of the nutplates is a bit ackward. Then the plexi needs to be countersunk. I'm not that happy with the result but as I intedended to use Tinnerman washers this will be hidden. The use of those washers allows also for some play and so I could align the lenses a bit better. After a few days out of the workshop for family matters, back to work. Today's task was to adapt the nav light plexi covers to the wintip cutout. This needs a step by step approach. I needed almost an hour for the first cover which came out just right. Only twenty minutes later, cover number two was finished and looking better too. I still have to drill the holes for the mounting screws. Working time on this subpart Today : 2h (Total : 7h) |
